Spoiler-free
I first read this graphic novel years ago, so I have little recollection of the events that happen, but I do remember enjoying it a lot. I also know I only read the first couple of volumes because graphic novels are expensive. However, I recently saw the entire series available for free at my local library, so picking up this series again was a no-brainer!
Saga Vol 1 is an intergalactic sci-fi adventure following two star-crossed lovers, Marko and Alana. Their love is forbidden, given that their species are at war. Marko's species has horns. Alana's has wings. Alana becomes pregnant, and therefore, they are on the run as horns and wings don't belong together in this volatile world.

The world is incredibly imaginative and brutal, with unique designs for various species. The art style perfectly illustrates in full colour all of the wild and monstrous creations. I particularly loved the design of The Stalk. She reminded me of Niohuru's pregnant spider look from Dragula season 5.

We are introduced to a bunch of characters in this first volume. Most notably, our star-crossed lovers, who will do anything to keep their newborn safe from harm. This theme of family stays prevalent throughout the first volume and helps us to bond with this newly formed family, just trying to survive. Despite the severity of their situation, they still do find time for snappy comedic banter back and forth, which makes me root for them even more.

Following them around is a snarky teenage ghost called Izabel. She provided excellent comic relief from the trauma the couple was facing, and I felt like I instantly understood her character.

We also follow Robot IV, a sort of government figure, struggling to balance doing his moral duty with his developing family life. Not sure how I feel about this TV guy yet... He seems a bit too self-righteous, but no doubt he'll go on a humbling arc. I do love it when he uses his TV head as a screen to show things.

The Will is a freelancer tasked with the job of hunting down Marko and Alana. Initially, he is shown as a brute, but as the story unfolds, extra layers are peeled back to his character, revealing him to be not all bad. I'm quite liking this guy so far, he seems fairly chill in a weird way. I always love an animal companion, so I'm intrigued to see what role Lying Cat will play in future volumes.

Even in this first volume, the sheer scope of this intergalactic world is proven to be vast and surreal. I'm excited to see where this series goes in the future, given its unpredictable and silly nature, combined with its poignant messaging and prevalent themes of family and War.
